Carbohydrates And Weight Loss

Cutting Out Carbohydrates Is the Best Way To Lose Weight

It’s a common belief that cutting out carbohydrates from your diet is a quick way to lose weight. This is another reason why carbohydrates are viewed as ‘bad’ foods.

Let’s discuss.

So Why Do You Lose Weight Quickly When You Cut Out Carbs?

Let’s start with glycogen. Glycogen is a form of energy (glucose) stored in our muscles and liver. For example, when we exercise, it is an important form of energy. This is why carbohydrates are a great energy source.

Each gram of glycogen is stored with 3g of water. When you cut out carbohydrates, your body starts to use up stored glycogen for energy. Glycogen is stored with water in your muscles and liver, so as your body depletes these stores, you lose water weight. This can result in a quick drop on the scale, but it’s not fat loss.

Often people may find once they resume a higher calorie consumption and reintroduce carbohydrates post diet, that weight may fluctuate. This is why prioritizing strength training and a protein-rich diet is key for fat loss, building muscle and maintaining your results.

Carbohydrates, especially whole grains and fibrous sources, can help keep us full, and energised and be part of your diet, even if your goal is weight loss. This is important for digestion, overall satiety, mood and energy levels – especially if you are also exercising.
